New Year 2010 holiday in ISDRA

With the approaching holidays, off-road enthusiasts look forward to their annual New Year’s Trip to the sand dunes where nighttime glow-sticks and campfires greet friends and family alike.
In 2010, the dunes will see some new programs, as well as a continuation of past programs. Like an old friend, the 13th Annual Dunes Cleanup will be hosted by United Desert Gateway (UDG) on January 16th. Scheduled to coincide with the MLK holiday weekend, this event is one of the most beneficial ways for volunteers to directly impact the entire Imperial Sand Dune Recreation Area (ISDRA).
ASA extends a warm welcome to all dune visitors this season, and reminds that the ASA web-site has a vast amount of information and resources related to the off-roading hobby.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes

The Coral Pink Sand Dunes is a Southern Utah State Recreation area located roughly 9 miles west of Kanab, Utah, and less than a mile from the Arizona border. The dunes are roughly 7 miles long but average only 1/2 mile wide. The park encompasses about 3,700 acres but only about 1,000 are rideable. A 22 unit state campground with partial hookups is at the park as well as the Meadows, a dry camp area about 850′ long by 400′ wide. Elevation is at 6,000 ft and the highest dunes are at 6,500 ft. Many western movies were made at the dunes including “Arabian Nights” in 1942, “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves” in 1944, “Timbuktu” in 1959, “The Greatest Story Ever Told” in 1965, “MacKenna’s Gold” in 1969 and “One Little Indian” in 1973. The dunes were created by winds eroding the red rock Moccasin Terrace to the Southwest. The park is open year round and reservations at the campground are accepted.
And last June, Kevin McKenzie got a chance to travel to Southern Utah’s Coral Pink Sand Dunes.

Places to Ride: Moses Lake Sand Dunes, Washington State

The sand dunes at Moses Lake may not be the most glamorous place to ride in the Pacific Northwest, but they do have their advantages. The first time I rode here was in the late 80’s. I was in town with a business associate, and he had brought his motorcycles, a large bore Husky and his street legal Honda 175. Guess which machine I was privileged to ride? Well, I survived and about 10 years later when my children were old enough to ride and were on spring break with nothing planned, the Moses Lake Dunes came to mind. We borrowed some ATVs from some friends, took an RV, and camped right on the sand. Everyone had a good time, and we have been going back a couple times a year ever since. Now, what the Moses Lake Sand Dunes lack in glamour they make up for in comfort and convenience.
